Banyani is a youth-led climate-action nonprofit headquartered in Ghana, with representation in Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya and beyond.
Who we are
We empower communities, schools and individuals to take bold action against climate change, and to reimagine a greener, fairer Africa.
Founded by a passionate team of African climate advocates, Banyani connects grassroots movements with national and global sustainability goals. Through environmental education, community projects and creative advocacy, we equip the next generation with the tools to protect our planet.
Our story
From conversation to calling.
Almost two years ago, in a lecture theatre at the University of Cape Coast, a few students gathered simply to talk about the environment, Africa’s future and the world we were inheriting. Somewhere in that conversation, a calling took shape: a response to a global crisis that demanded local ownership.
With no name, funding or structure, just purpose, we organised ourselves, reached out to mentors and advocates, and moved from talk to impact. Out of that shared purpose, Banyani was born.
The name
Banyani reflects interconnectedness in local Ghanaian dialects, because climate action is a deeply human connection between people, place and purpose.
To drive climate action and sustainable development across Africa.
We catalyse grassroots climate action and build the capacity of African communities to lead their own sustainable future. We work to:
✦
Equip young people through climate education and environmental clubs in schools.
✦
Support communities with nature-based solutions like reforestation, clean energy and climate-smart agriculture.
✦
Promote innovation and advocacy through circular-economy initiatives like Waste to Art.
✦
Collaborate with governments, institutions and partners to amplify local voices and solutions.
Our vision
A sustainable and resilient Africa where communities thrive in the face of climate change.
We envision a continent where climate-conscious citizens, empowered by education and innovation, lead the charge toward sustainability: communities equipped to adapt, ecosystems restored, and young leaders driving transformation from the classroom to the policymaking table.
Our vision is grounded in justice, resilience and the belief that African communities can flourish, even in a warming world.
Where we work
Rooted in Ghana. Growing across Africa.
We have representation in more than five African countries and a growing pan-African network of changemakers.
